Do you like to enjoy a good wine?
If so, let me tell you about the history of wine in Llucmajor, an area in Mallorca that has stood out since ancient times for the excellence of its wines.
Llucmajor is one of the oldest and most populated areas of Mallorca. Its rich history is evidenced by the numerous talaiots and villages scattered throughout the municipality. But the most interesting thing is that Llucmajor was one of the first areas where the Romans planted vines and since then, it has been recognized for the quality of its wines.
It is no coincidence that Pliny the Elder in his book "Natural History" compared the wines of the Balearic Islands with the best of the Roman Empire. But it is after the conquest of Mallorca in 1232 by King Jaume I, that the cultivation of the vine in Llucmajor reaches its maximum expression. For centuries, Llucmajor wines were known throughout the Mediterranean for their quality and incomparable taste.
However, in the nineteenth century, phylloxera arrived in Europe, causing great devastation in the vineyards, and as a consequence, the decline of the wine sector in Llucmajor and throughout Europe. Despite this, the wine producers of Llucmajor did not give up and have struggled to recover the splendor of their winemaking past.
Today, Llucmajor is an emerging wine region, where you can find wines of excellent quality, made with native grapes such as Manto Negro or Callet. If you are a true wine lover, you cannot miss the opportunity to taste the wines of Llucmajor and immerse yourself in its rich winemaking history.
We assure you that you will not regret it!
The history of the wine sector of Llucmajor is about to change thanks to the planting of new vines on the Sa Bassa Plana estate at the beginning of this century. With the incorporation of native varieties such as Giró Ros, Premsal Blanc, Manto Negro and Callet and some of the most important international varieties such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malvasia in a total of 100 ha, this project promises to recover and revitalize the industry.
Viticulture in Sa Bassa Plana follows strict criteria, with most processes carried out manually, from pruning to harvesting. The typically Mediterranean climate and the unique characteristics of the soil allow the optimum ripening of the grapes, creating a distinctive "terroir" in the wines produced.
The winery, founded in 2014 by prominent Mallorcan architect Rafael Munar, prides itself on producing high quality wines using the latest technology in winemaking.
The winemaking process begins with low-yield, high-quality musts presses, then moves into stainless steel tanks for temperature-controlled fermentation. The result is a wine generous in aromas and covered with color. Aging processes are used in French oak barrels and sleepers, followed by bottle aging.
